Latest rumors onMB's racing future

Quote from the latest Autosport with regard the DTM series and the future:

"Mercedes is investigating the possibility of creating a German Based GT-type series to recreate the kind of sports car sprint events that proved so popular in the mid 80's......
Mercedes currently race their CLK saloon, but have both their SL55 and SLR road cars ready to rumble....."

It goes on to discuss the possibility of Mercedes going head to head with Porsche in a new GT series...also LeMans etc....in the future...maybe 2004...and beyond

Mercedes has been encouraging porsche to get involved and if they do it would result in a rulew change to accommodate aGT format which would probably mean a switch to either an SL55 or SLR based race car for Mercedes...this GT could hommalgated for both LeMans and ALMS or FIA GT.

Cool, my guess is that they'll likely race the SLR - as it's probably a better platform to transform into a racecar, also if past history is any consideration some of the purchasers of said cars will likely want to race them in a GT-type series. Witness the McLaren F1 road car, it was never intended to be a racing car - but people bought them then wanted to race 'em, draging McLaren cars reluctantly, albeit ultimately successfully, along.

McLaren might want to have a car with their name on it in the future for the FIA GT or Le Mans, essentially a McLaren badged MB. Maybe a newer version of the McLaren F1? I heard some rumors about a new McLaren road going car in automobile magazine, and if that came out, they would probably put that car in the FIA GT or Le Mans series.
