Odometer LCD Display Problem
I just purchased a 1999 C230 Kompressor with 50k miles.
Everthing works perfectly, except the tiny lcd screen where the odometer reading is, and the one above it for the trip computer. The problem is that the numbers are broken up, like some digit segments stopped working, making it very difficult to decipher.
Do you think I need a new instrument cluster?
Thank you.

The glass of the LCD display will be interconnected to the PC board with a rubber/carbon transport strip (alternating carbon & rubber insulator).
This strip has likely either moved or contamination on one side or the other has broken the connection. remove the glass & transport strips, clean the connections & strip with contact cleaner and reassemble.
If you would like a preview of what you are in for, disassemble an inexpensive LCD calculator.
Anything to attempt before replacing?
Dealer wants $1100.00 for refurbished cluster. State law requires odometer to be legible to pass inspection. Some numbers are broken up and at times they light up.
