motor oil for a 97' E320

i am using mobil1 10w-30 extended performance. haven't used it long, but right after i changed my oil with it, i went to mobil1.com and it says i should use 0w-40. when i first got the car i used swepco 15w4-40, its a blend of mineral and synthetic. since i put the mobil1 in, when the motor is cold it feels like it has alot more power, and when it warms up it feels weaker. it started doing this as soon as i put the 10w30 in. i am planning to switch to 0w-40 european car formula as soon as posible.

can i get you experts to elaborate on this?

For starters, the oil choice depends a lot on your climate (like Arizona versus Michigan), and I'm not familiar with your location.

I've been reading a bit lately about Mobil1 0W-40. This is an oil that appears to be developed by Mobil specially for Mercedes. From my reading I get the impression that this oil has a tendency to shear down to a 30-weight somewhat quickly and has a tendency to vaporize, resulting in needed top-offs.

Mobil1 Truck & SUV 5W-40 seems to be gaining favor over M1 0W-40 for many people.

Again, this depends.... on how often you change your oil and what type of driving you do (city stop & go or strictly highway). If you change it at least twice a year you can go with a slightly heavier weight for the summer and a slightly thinner weight for the winter. If you do mostly highway driving, you can up the lower number in the oil grade. These wide-range oils are developed for year-round, one-size-fits-all application, and it may be what you need for your E320.

I hesitate to be pinned down and give a recommendation, because, as you might know, if you ask 7 different mechanics their recommendation for which oil to use, you'll probably get 9 different opinions.

Anyhow, if you stick with synthetic, I don't think you can go wrong with M1 5W-40 T&SUV.
