saw an SL w/ a drive by wire system on Speedvision
it was a short segment about how Mercedes was working on new technologies. an SL (current model) had a drive by wire system - two joysticks (like flight controllers) on either side...
i thought it was fantastic! i don't know how you make a tight U-turn w/ it though? w/ a wheel, you can go hand over hand but w/ the joystick, how?
it ended up by saying that it was illegal b/c there was no backup system.

I saw that segment in the past. I remember them saying it was illegal in Germany because German laws stated that a car must have a steering wheel mechanically connected to the road wheels.
I think the steering rate is proportional to the force applied to the stick. The harder you push on the stick, the more the wheels will turn.
