Isn't this really old technology?

Mercedes head restraints...

I remember Saab, and maybe Volvo, having similar systems for years.

Or is it a completely different technology?

Head restraint

It's alot closer to Saab's that Volvo's. The Saab system resets itself. The Volvo requires a parts replacement.

Note how MB stresses that it's resettable.

Correct, they have been on the market for 5-6 years so far.

It really isn't a "head restraint". It's more like a "shove the headrest forward as quickly as possible.

Restraining to me, would imply that your head would be grabbed by a giant hand and not move at all.

Maybe if at the dealerships, when he go in for service, the suture in velcro to the backs of our heads... <s>

The thing that article doesn't say is that this only comes into play in very low speed collisions. Don't quote me, but I thought it was under 10mph only. This is to avoid whiplash.

In higher speed collisions, it isn't used because there isn't a whiplash injury possibility.
