Mercedes Benz 230e, 124
starting problem
Please check the fuel pump fitted near the fuel tank and the fuel accumalator. The accumalator is supposed to stablise the fuel pressure before it reaches the distributor. I have not cut open a accumlator but appeas that it contains a diaphram supported on a spring to keep the pressure constant.
I had the same problem till it was traced to the troublesome two. There is also another way to check it, by asking your friend to keep cranking the car and loosing the one of the fuel injector lines to check for the flow of fuel.
I am sure replacing these will solve the problem.

Could be the above or any number of things.
If it runs fine once it is warmed up it could be the cold start valve which pumps in a bit more gas when the engine is cold or the supplementary air device.
