hi guys
can anyone tell me if the exhaust manifold on my[ 2000 year ]slk can be welded? it is cracked just above where the exhaust down pipe is bolted to the manifold.my irish dealer wants nearlt 800 dollars plus fitting for one.
any help apprecated

My experience with welding manifolds tells me its a bad idea. Manifold is likely to crack further during the welding and even if it does not it most likely will not hold up. In addition I believe that you will have to remove the manifold to weld so that other items are not damaged. Labor of doing this will add to your cost.

That's really expensive for a manifold. Must be the labor.

Isn't that like a $200 part?

i rang my brother in boston and he priced it at 600$. it would take 2 weeks to come from germany. i took the manifold off , it is not a cast item, only mild steel. it took a great weld by a local specialst [ he did not charge me for the job it took so little time]
so the score now is me 1------s/dealer 0
thanks to all who bothered to try and help me.my alarm gave the usual water trouble, i was asked for 800 euro about $1,000. my bro bought it in boston for 400$ and posted it to me last week. score now 2---- nil
