Power steering level - '96 C180

I wish to check the fluid level for the power steering. The manual i've got says theres a dip-stick with two marks for hot or cold.
However on undoing mine there was no dipstick, but a widget inside the reservoir to mark the level.
It's marked 'Max 20c' and when cold, fluid is below this mark but when hot it's slightly over.
Should I check the level when cold or hot?

The temperature mentioned refers to the temperature of the power steering fluid. Because it is difficult to know the exact temperature when warm, maybe it is best to check the level in the morning when cold. I should set the level at the 20° mark.
I guess you have a metal reservoir. The power steering pumps with plastic reservoirs have dipsticks.
