Weird CLK320 problem..help

i have a 2001 clk320 that just turned 50k miles. I just had the B service done and all other services were done on-time.

I stopped at a stoplight and while sitting at idle..the car turned off. no sputters or strange sounds, it just cutoff. i tried to restart and it turned over for 5-7 seconds and stopped. after about 3 minutes and a hell of lot a horns blowing, cursing and god knows what else...the car started normally.

The check engine light stayed on after starting a couple of times....but then cutoff and i havent seen it since. there's no malfunctions...and everything seems to run smoothly. any ideas?

I saw a post in a newsgroup that had the EXACT same thing happen to a clk-320 but no solution.

I'm taking it in to have the fault codes checked...but i'm worried there may not be a fault code since the CEL doesnt come on anymore, and now im afraid to drive it in DC traffic.

My guess....

I agree with E55AMG99.....sounds like cranshaft position sensor. I had same symptom, same situation, happen to me. They can do a resistance reading to see if it's OK. High failure item.

ok cool....i have to go in today for a fault code check and i'll mention it. my service advisor is being pretty cool about it since they just did the B service, he'll get the fault code read for free. (then gouge me to death if they find something nasty.)

thanks!

while I have never changed one myself, I understand they are very easy to do at home and the part is quite inexpensive. STF for crank position sensor and see if you can find anything.

Good luck.

you guys are geniuses! geniuses i say!

yes it was the p0335 crankshaft position sensor they quoted me $400 for the fix

so, next question...is this something that may not happen again for 10k miles? or may happen tomorrow?

this car as been nothing but problems...now that the warranty has expired i think i'm gonna have to move to something else

Part cost $65 on the internet. Bosch, same part you buy at the dealer. Replacement take 10 min. max 2 min. max to diagnose. You need to find an independent mechanic that is good and you can trust if you don't want/can't fix your car yourself. Should be $150 total job. I bought an OBD II scan tool for $39 that would have detected and cleared that error code or you go to a parts store and they'll hook up the tool for free.
