brake dust

I've had my 1994 sl500 for a month now, it doesn't take many miles before the front wheels get dirty from oily brake dust. It doesn't wipe off without a wheel cleaner/degreaser. Is this normal? Or did the previous owner put on cheap pads? What is the best pad to use to prevent this. The back wheels stay clean and don't have this problem

I've been searching threads on brake dust, I'm learning that my problem is normal, but I don't think it is right

Not "right"?

That's an understatement. Since most manufacturers have solved the problem you'd think the German auto industry could too. Everyone seems to blame it on the TUV (techincal watchdog in Germany). Buy pads from an aftermarket supplier that understands what the customer wants until MB gets it right. The backs stay cleaner because the fronts are doing all the work....or someone put even dirtier pads on than stock MB (if that's possible).

Mine are bad, but a lot depends on the type of wheels (clearcoat, paint, aluminum, etc.) you have. If you clean them and put a coat of wax on, they will stay cleaner longer--but they will still require cleaning on a regular, but less frquent basis. I also found that a simple feather duster two or three times a week will keep them clean even longer.

I heard Wheel Wax works pretty good. Their site is www.wheelwax.com.

I have yet to try it, but will be ordering it in the near future. Will post experience after giving it a shot.

I would like to know what you think. I have read good and bad reviews.

I just use whatever good quality car wax I have around. Used Meguire's liquid Gold Seal clearcoat wax recently, and it does seem to help. Have never seen any actual "data" on Wheel Wax, but would be very interested in what you think after a few weeks.
