I'd like to know as well. Everything I've read says that the keys cannot be reprogrammed, but they innards can be transplanted to another key and be functional.

If its just the lock/unlock thats not working you can resynch them see your manual. If its not allowing you to start the car then the dealer can take care of that.

If thats the case I would visit the dealer, seems as if the problem may be with the car and not the key fobs as both have stopped working at the same time.

Problem with key, can not start the car.

I am having kind of the same problem on '97 e420. master key does not allow to start the car, and the alarm, door locks and windows do not work. The only way to start the car is to use the wallet key, that does not have the IR transmiter.

any idea. I do not have the past history of the car.

I really don't think it's the key that are the problem. Sounds like it's a car issue. Perhaps antenna on rear window, rear sam, etc.
