1999 E300
Question Transmission refuses to shift

I have a 1999 E300 (diesel) MB, auto, ASR, 125k miles. On cold winter days when care is exposed to temperatures around 32 deg F or below for extented periods of time, the transmission sticks in a single gear and refuses to shift. Tonight it stayed there for ten miles. I had to get it home from the airport. It seems to be start in second gear (Limp Mode) and stayed there until it decided to shift normally when I was almost home. It has done this several times before on cold days and does not matter if I have the block heater plugged in or not. Any ideas on what to check first. Everyday when the temp is about 35 or higher it runs just great.

2001 E220cdi ,2004 E500
i have had the same problem with my 2001 E220 cdi. it got stuck in second gear. try topping up on transmission fluid Dextron III.it also helps some times to shift the gear in neutral and then back into drive again. finally if i stopped the car and turn of the engine, only for a second and then start the car again it always worked just fine.
