5-speed auto problem

hi ,my car is a 300ce-24. My 2 year long problem is that it by-passes 4th gear, and so basically goes from 3rd-5th.After clearing the fault codes it comes back into operation for a few weeks than faults again, and remains so until the fault codes are cleared again. We have done a full transmission overhall, replaced the trans...computer,replaced the shift solenoid, replaced the wiring harness from the trans to the computer, replaced the battery, replaced the over-voltage protection relay, and replaced the valve body.Nothing but nothing has fixed this most frustrating problem. The amount of times its been into the dealer over this thing has been obsurd, they just are completely baffled. The one and only time the problem stayed away for more than a few weeks was when we changed the over-voltage protection relay, and it operated normaly for a massive 32 weeks.
If someone can please come up with the solution to this problem ,than you would be labeled a genius. many thanks Dimitri.

If all the items that you mentioned were correctly done then it must be a sensor external to the transmission that is causing this. Have a look at all sensors that would feed the trans computer. The big problem is that its an intermittent problem and thats the most difficult to diagnose.

Did you say you had replaced the Electronic transmission Control module?

Yes thats correct, we replaced the electronic transmission control module ,which sits just behind the battery in the corner of the firewall. The over-voltage protection relay is there also. Thanks for your response so far guys, and about the sensors, could you elaborate a little more on that,i'm not sure of their function in this matter. thanks again Dimitri.

The sensors feed the information to the control module. I am not certain which ones come into play but could be speed sensor, Rpm sensor, throttle position sensor and others. Your dealer should have this information. Good luck!!

thanks sosh,i will mention them to the dealer plus i,m going to get them to change the actual plug for the over voltage relay. Those sensors do sound like a good logical lead though. Thanks again,it,s much appreciated. Dimitri

My 300ce-24 is a 92' . Australian delivered cars were all top of the line fully optioned up models offered only ,and so when the 24 valve versions arrived they came with the 5-speed auto also. This engine and transmission was the same as that fitted to the then, new 300sl's.This is why their should be plenty of them out there, and my problem must also have occured for someone else with this engine transmission combo.
p.s it is essentially the same trans as the 4-speed fitted to the earlier 300ce,and they added the 5th gear which cuts in at 80km's,this drops about 500rpm's of the revs, and gives a higher top speed.1st and 2nd gears were slightly lowered in ratio also.

Talking 300CE24 Auto Problem- I have the same fault

Hi,

I've just been reading about the problem with your 300CE24, and I have the same. This probably doesn't help, but I'm glad it's not just me and someone else knows about this. Mine is a UK 300CE-24 1991. Mine does exactly the same as yours, revs round and changes right, until it reaches 4th, which it misses totally and goes straight from 3rd to 5th. I've not taken mine to any dealers yet, as I am sure the problem is electrical or something small and relatively un-important as everything else works fine. If you've cured this, or anyone else out there knows how to cure this, please please please let me know. Many thanks, Emily

The below is what I found from this forum, post by DIMITRIAR, I have also meet the same problem, so I wish to know what and where is the "Earth wire", can DIMITRIAR kindly to show the photo of the wire? or any other member can reply?

"problem solved

we'll, the biggest most established benz dealership cracked my year long tormenting problem in under two hours, with lateral thinking and professional expertise.(diesel motors) in perth, western australia. It was something small as i always suspected it would be.A Earth wire gone astray, tucked under something and which simply was not connected to anything.Upon connecting it to it's proper place,we immediately got 4th gear back working and no fault codes to speak of.I am so happy and thankfull to them. This also conferms that my year long struggle with this problem and the way it was handled in a smallish regional town like cairns ,means that i was dealing hillbilly's."

That's because there are none in the USA.

Update.

Well unfortunately, after about 32 weeks of having my 4th gear operating, to my disbelief, the beast returned, and so back to square one. Since then we had it mentioned at the annual Mercedes Head Technitions conferance,in Melbourne, with most pointing to the overvoltage relay, which we have already done, and one technition mentioned the Altinator. So we again put in another new Overvoltage Relay, and tried that.Result negative! Then even though my altinator tested o.k, we put in a new more powerful modern Bosch version, which were fitted to the last versions of the W124. Again, after about 10 weeks, the beast returned! With nowhere to go from here,as everything had now been exhausted,we agreed to meet the beast halfway,by have a special wiring device, made up by the Benz people, which has the ability to clear my fault codes, thus my fourth gear returns for it's usual few months. This device,i will carry in my glovebox, and be able to use whenever needed. It was my last resort, but it has taken the frustration out completely, and now i'm cool. Ah! the serenity! And so for the trouble of lifting the bonnet and plugging this device in for a minute every few months,i look at the beast and say touch'e.
