how to identify motor

I'm considering a boat purchase- current owner has neither clue, nor bucket to carry one in if he did . . .
He tells me it's five-cylinder from a junked 300D- I'm thinking maybe 617?

Thus- two questions:
Where do I look for what for serial #'s etc to identify Ye Beaste?
Any pointers / links to discussion of marinized MB diesel use (I've found several European and British "Boat for sale" postings noting 617 as power plant)

Please reply direct to me tom_d@chebucto.ns.ca as well as group

Thanks!

What ever it is, if its not marinized totally stay away from it. Lots of differences from a car engine to a marine version of the same engine

Head gasket, thermostat, water pump, freeze plugs, some require different pistons, cams, valves, oil pan, oil pick up and I can go on and on. If the engine is raw water cooled without a heat exchanger these items are even more important particularly in salt water. Oh yes, you will also need to have an oil cooler that is water cooled. Car engines that are used in boats have a very short life span unless totally converted.

as currently set up <keel cooler/expansion tank/belt-driven external pump/oil cooler> it's not intended / not possible for "high performance" "hot-rodding"

all I really need to know is where do I find serial # so I can identify (not familiar with this series)
