A couple of times the car won't start, turns over but won't catch. I turn it off then back on and usually by the third time it will turn over and catch. Then it runs just fine. What is going on?

Could be any of a number of things, what mileage is on the car ,has it been regularly serviced?
Firstly I would look at the fuel system , filter or pump, as if it was on the ignition side it would probably run roughly once it started.
Unless you can do the work yourself i would suggest you take the car to a trusted garage and tell them of your problem.
Come back if you can give more information.
Geo.

mon-
i've read many times similar symptoms which point to crankshaft position sensor
as being the root cause. you may want to see if this may be the problem.
for the later E320s the fix is about $100 and less than an hour.
