proper operation of 96 W210 alarm system

its a 96 w/ the funky sensor mounted on the rear mirror with low sensitivity (I have to point the key just right while touching the window in order for it to activate/deactivate the system). When it deactivates and opens the doors, the red/green lights blinks in an alternating manner for a long time, possibly 30-45 seconds. It has been odd to begin driving down the road with the red/green lights going-wonder if someone thinks I stole the car! Is this normal? The car has exibited odd electrical problems at times-the button that raises the rear headrests does not work and once in a blue moon when someone else tries to disarm the alarm, they've blown the fuse. I've replaced the standard fuse w/ a 20amp, happens only when other people have used the car as I know how to disarm is I suppose.

can anyone provide insight as to the proper operation of the alarm system?

thanks
