SL making wierd sounds...

My '03 SL500 is making some wierd noises. First thing in the morning after starting there is a moaning sound as I steer out of the garage and go down my driveway. It only happens when I turn the wheel in either direction going forward or backing. The sound goes away in a few minutes and does not return until the next morning! The second sound is a whining as I take my foot off the gas at 50-54 miles per hour. That's the only time it occurs and it does this all the time! This sound seems to be coming from the rear of the car. My MB service says BOTH are a compressor motor and the sounds are "normal" What do you think?

Hi Benzboy!
Frontnoise:
If the noise is coming only in cold condition, while you turn the steering wheel,
its most the first signal for a defective steeringoilpump or steering rack. The noise becomes louder by the time also in hot condition.
Rear noise:
The noise sounds for you like from the rear? You can reproduce it at every time? The noise comes only at a specified speedrange?
Sounds for me like your final drive unit makes humming noises. Its a very well known problem on Mercedes Benz Cars.Give the Car to your Mec.Dealer.
There is a good chance to get goodwill on the final drive unit, if your car is well serviced.

Hope i m right and its helping .

You seem to have lost a little fluid in the tandem hydraulic pump of the ABC system. You may not have a leak, it could just be slightly low on fluid. The pentosin fluid seems to dissipate a little over time especially on cars that are not driven frequently.

I can't say much about the humming noise. It could be the rear axle as stated, but its not that common..... have the dealer check it out.

Car is back. You guys were right about the front noise. Power steering/asp pump was bad. Replaced...now it's fine. Rear noise was diagnosed to be a loose exhaust bracket (tightened-noise gone) Noise is still there I'm going to return it to the dealer and demand that they look into the final drive question. Annoying as hell since this is the third time it's been in for the same thing!
