w124 wagon rear suspension problem

I have a 1995 E320 wagon,102k, with a very bouncy rear suspension.
The self leveling feature does not apear to be working and driving the car has become very uncomfortable. I know that it's a hydrolic self leveling system.
A couple of questions; Does anybody know what part of this system is most likely to fail and cause such a harsh ride and secondly could the system be converted to regular shocks?

No. And, it's a dumb idea.

I would change the accumulators and then readjust the self levelling bar in the rear

Thank you Sunman; I will give that a try.
