installing reverse camera 2006 ml500

installing reverse camera 2006 ml500

hi all.

I'm lost and i need help!

I installed a rearview camera and monitor to my 2006 ml500. For the power source I used the reverse light power so it will turn on when the car is in reverse and turn off when its not. here is the problem....

When the key is turned to on (but the car is off) and i put the car in reverse the camera and monitor work perfectly. the reverse light is turned on as well.
When the car is on and i put it in reverse it doent work, but the reverse light turns on. This doesnt make sense. what happens when the car is actually on to make the camera and monitor not work? do i need a resistor or something???
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Where exactly did you hook up to for your power?

thanks for replying.
i hooked it up to the positive lead for the reverse light. I figured if the reverse light was on the car was going in reverse and the camera would turn on. Bad idea??

Actually, the factory sytem works the same way- it pigtails off the left reverse lamp (white wire) to feed the backup camera module, if you hooked up there, it should work.
