Extremely strange W210 display problem. HELP!!

So I picked up a 2000 E430 4 matic on friday. The car is in good shape with 48k miles.

Now, when I took a test drive last week, I clicked the up button on the multifunction steering wheel, when the display showed overall mileage. This brought me to the "Service B in 9700 miles" page.

Now, however, I go to the overall mileage page, and neither the up, nor down buttons on the wheel do anything. The page does not change from trip/overall mileage. I can not get to the FSS information, nor can I get to the Oil level indicator.

I can use the menu buttons to cycle through the menus. However, I am missing the "Audio" information page. It is not shown on the screen. The car has the nav system if that matters. This I don't care about so much.

However, the Final problem is that when I go to the "miles since Start" page, and use the up/down buttons to scroll through, the only pages I see are the "miles since start" and "miles since Reset". There is no fuel range page.

I find it extremely strange that these options used to exist and should be here, but just aren't anymore. The display works fine, mileage is added, no pixels out, the steering wheel buttons work, etc.

Why do some pages work, and other don't?

Thank you.

Oliver

As a guess the codings in the instrument cluster may be incorrect or menus disabled, but not being able to change the odometer to trip meter is very weird!!!!
