Question Transmission Issue

My car, all of a sudden, stopped going into second gear. I was driving the whole day, and the car was doing fine, but once I started it up after leaving my office, the car wouldn't go anywhere from first gear.

I am worried its the enitr transmission, but could it be possibly something smaller? Was there a common transmission problem with the 1998 S320 (w140)?

Also, can anybody suggest a proper MB technician in the NJ area?

It is unlikely that you need a complete re-build...but that is up to you and is expensive, or just get re-built for $1500 or one from a wrecker for $600. If you can find a shop that will just repair the problem even better. It may just be the governor needs replacing...they are about $350. The point is you have options. Sign up with Alldata and do a little reading before you just run out and throw money at it. Ask questions of any shop BEFORE they get their hands on your car.

Thanks for the advice Brian. I hope it is just a governor!. I used to have a guy out in Milltown named Mercedes Bob. This guy knew everything that needed to be known when it came to MB's. From what I hear he went back to dealership to learn about all the new cars and technology, but will be back on the street soon.

Until then, I need to find somebody who knows how to work on these MB's. Dealership's going to tear me another hole, if you know what I mean.

Anybody can recommend somebody in the NJ area, please advise.

Unlikely you need new transmission. That trans is the 722.6 electronic trans. It is probably in limp-home mode. Due to electrical problem or possible mechanical problem. Find reputable independant mercedes benz shop. A good shop with a good tech will find specific problem and fix with out just replacing trans. What part of NJ?
