Actually there are two problems with the S Class:

SRS light is flashing sporadically; sometimes it stays lit, other times flashes or just is off.

Grinding noise like plastic grinding gears when the air system is turned on for about a minute, goes on fine and has a slight electrical burning smell for a minute.

Solutions??

CLS500:

Not really a problem; more of an inconvenience; No matter what temp the air is set to, if i press auto it turns on the AC. this is an annoyance. any software update to fix this or any button combo to disable this from happening?

The SRS light flashing means there is a significant problem with the SRS system. Need to take it to a dealer and figure out whats going on. As for the grinding noise, it sounds like the blower motor is binding on something and the smell is from the blower motor about to fry itself. Check to make sure you are not leaking water into the car and through the A/C system because of a clogged drain in the intake box under the hood.

AC on in auto mode is a Mercedes standard.

AC is a dehumidifier, which is needed perhaps in winter more than summer.

SRS light needs the SDS plugged int to test. seat belt buckles and clock springs are most common causes.
The clicking noise with the a/c is most likley one of the stepper motors, either binding or with a broken linkage. If the blower motor was bad the noise would be on the right side of the car, and you would feel low air pressure.
You should be able to use the ACoff button to have AUTO without the ac on.
