Oil requirements for GL 320 CDI

Does anyone know what weight and grade of oil is required for the GL diesel. The dealer tells me it is 5W 40 Mobil 1. But I am concerned as they seemed confused when I asked them

i don't know a lot about oil, but i would take a look at this. if your diesel engine is euro4 or bluetec exhaust particle filters, then look at the end of the page for 229.51, if not then look at 229.5. it specifies m1 formula m 5w40 for diesel i think.

Same oil is suggested by MB Toronto service advisers. You are OK. Make sure it is the low ash variety.

Look carefully at the container. On the back in the fine print it must say it complies with MB sheet 229.51. No other MB spec is correct for your car. Not every Mobil 1 oil meets this tough specification. The data base in auto parts stores is wrong. Don't expect to find this oil at Canada Tire because so few cars use it. When changing the oil, be sure to get the specified filter too. Oil and filter are engineered as a system to prevent sludge in your crankcase.
