300D Alternator Bushing/Keyway?
Recently had a problem - sounded like I was dragging a stick under the car.. Got home it stopped, but water pump was suspect as the outer bearing had some play. Replaced water pump ran car for over an hour road test - ALL OK..
The next day about 3 mi from home, noise started again, pulled off the road it stopped
Drove home no problem.. Further investigation showed some rub marks on front of alternator. Pulled belt checked for play in Brgs none to speak of, so bent the fan away from the housing about .100". Took for a test drive all OK. Next day same thing about 3 miles from home loud scraping noise again.
Drove home and removed the alternator, found the pulley was loose just enough to be able to turn the fan. Was able to remove the nut w/o tools so it was loose.
Proceeded to remove the pulley and found a keyway but no key, and didn't appear to ever have one.. There was a thrust washer behind the pulley before the fan, so I cleaned all the parts, reassembled and tightened the nut while hold the 8mm allen head. Now it appears fine.
Question - is there supposed to be a key in the keyway, or another thrust washer (thin) between the fan and the large thrust washer?
Thanks in advance for the replies.
