MBTech - engine cylinder material question

What are the cylinder bores in the Mercedes V-6 and V-8 engines made of? Are there replaceable liners or is the aluminum block itself bored and coated/treated with Nikasil or something similar?

If the latter is the case, how long do the bores last in normal use, and what does one do when the bores are worn? Chuck the block out and buy a new one, or rebore it and fit iron liners?

I've asked this before to no avail, but I'd really like to know the answer.

TIA
