190E (W201) Exhaust system question
Car - 1991 MB 190E 2.6, 118,000 miles. Recently lost the exhaust pipe assembly between the center muffler and the rear muffler. Repair costs, best estimate was ~$900, but car is only worth about $2500. Question is - why are there two (center and rear) mufflers, and can the car be fitted with a single exhaust pipe/muffler assembly after the catalytic converter?

It's not uncommon for the W201 or W124 cars to "lose" their mufflers since the rubber mounting 'donuts' are usually neglected by owners, then vibration and corrossion do their thing.
The dual muffler setup is for noise control. It is a Mercedes.
