1974 merc 280c..need help!
My engine died last week and my mechanic recommends rebuilding or replacing motor with rebuilt one....or send it to the graveyard. Since everything else on the car has been replaced, susp, brakes, tires, rearend rubber bushings, etc I want to bring car back to life. Can someone recommend a place to get a reasonably priced rebuilt motor in calif? Is there a more powerful merc motor that will drop in and mate with the factory 4 sp tranny? TIA

It changes all the time
My suggestion would be to just walk away. Get away from that Solex. If you like coupes, move up to at least a 123 chassis, but even better, get a nice 124 chassis. You should be able to pick up a nice 89 or 90 in the $3000 to $4000 range. I think you would realy enjoy the updates over the 114 chasis. The 300CEs are really nice.

mercs.lots of em!
Keep the w114! it's a classic car, nice lines ,great handling and cheap parts. Look for a W126 280 and swap in the later engine with Kjet injection. It's easier if you buy a clunker with reasonble engine so you can swap in the injection pump etc .
Or you can just use the base engine with your carb, either way you win! and it's all bolt in.

The 114 is a beautiful car, I would keep it. Most importantly, how do you know your engine is dead? How did it die, what is wrong with it, etc? A friend of mine had the exact same car, same year, so I am pretty familiar with it.
Check out www.mercedesengines.net for an excellent rebuilt. First I would see if you can get yours working though.
