Unhappy 1994 C280 Tranny Hiccups

1994 C280 2 Door Automatic Power Everything. V6

This all started about a month ago. The tranny was shifting very VERY hard from 1st to 2nd and about half as hard from 2nd to 3rd with normal shifting from 3rd to 4th. Then it progressively got a little worse the next day whereas I'd press the accelerator down, and the vehicle did not respond at all. Eventually it would gradually get up to speed but it was a very jerky acceleration and eventually would slip again once I came to a stop. I parked the car after that incident.

I called around to different mechanic shops but no one around here works on Mercedes Benz except the Benz dealership in New Orleans (1 hour away). So I was forced to call a dealership in town. Long story short, Greg Leblanc Toyota changed my transmission filter, pan, and gasket and did a total flush of the transmission. This process took a month because the pan was hard to find/order.

The car was test driven by a good friend of mine whom works at the dealership, and he said that it was driving great. We drove it downtown afterwards and did some errands and had no problems. The car then sat still for about 4 - 5 hours. I tried to go to Walgreens and the tranny slipped again like before, this time presenting a very audible "pop" noise as if I had ran over a branch and it "snapped" under the tire. But this was not the case. The sound came from the engine compartment. I called my friend at the dealership and requested he come take a look at it this afternoon once more. And he suggested that there was some sort of "band" in the transmission that had popped. Does this make sense to anyone?

I need this car to run desperately as it is the only means of transportation I have.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

If could be a B2 piston failure or a broken B2 band, which is common in 722.4 transmissions.

Check for a broken band by looking at it, remove the transmission oil pan and valve body. The B2 band is the rear one, by the tail.
