Will disconnecting the main battery suffice for purposes of deactivating the SBC for purposes of doing a pads and rotors R&R on an E55?

No!! That's the main purpose of the back up battery. The process is well explained in the E class forum.

Disconnect the big connector at the SBC unit.

Pull up plastic loop to disconnect, push it down to reconnect.
