Clunk and vibration in Park while depressing brake pedal

Got in the car to come home today--started, put my foot on the brake and heard a mild "Clunk" and hiss, felt the gearshift knob vibrate while still in "Park".
First time it has happened since new; now about 4700 miles on the S430.
Reproducible by letting off the brake while in "Park", and depressing the pedal again.
I know there is a "lockout" to prevent engaging the gears from "Park" and you have to press the brake pedal to override it. It has to be the "gate" that is making the noise and that I feel moving around down there.
Any ideas what is wrong? Why is it audible and palpable after being imperceptible from new?
