Hey guys,

I hate to ask another question about DIY oil changes, but I'm just not finding the info I'm looking for in the archives.

1. I live in Houston, TX ~ what kind of oil should I be using? The dealer used 20W50 (don't know the brand) according to my last service order.

2. Where is the oil filter located...pics would be extremely helpful if possible!!

3. Where can I buy an oil filter (besides the dealer) and what brand do to buy?

Thanks in advance!

i too have a 99 clk 430, but have never actually changed the oil myself. however, i used to change the oil myself on previous cars and all you have to do is go down to an auto parts store and they will have manuals referring to your specific make and model car and which model oil filter will fit your car. call mb service to ask them where the oil filter is located.

0W-30, 5W-30. 0W-40, 5W-30, and 5W-50 are suitable at temps lower than -13 F.

10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, and 10W-60 are suitable for temps above -4 F.

15W-40 and 15W-50 are usaable above 5 F.

20W-40 and 20W-50 are for temps over 23 F.

I am not familiar wth your car, but try looking for the filter under the cover on the left side of the engine

The OEM filters are made by Hengst or Mann, part number A6002-105626 . Wix also makes a filter. Wix p/n 51226

There are several places to buy MB parts on-line. Just do a search.

I am not sure if you can buy a newer MB oil filter from any auto parts store. It will be the cone element that fits in a housing. I changed the oil on my old '96 S500 a couple times and it was interesting. Just like any other car except the oil filter. I had to remove my lower dirt guard to get to the drain plug easier. If you decide to lift the car, I would recommend using a jack/jackstands because most ramps are not low enough unless you get rhino ramps. If you have less than 20,000 miles, I would recommend going with synthetic oil. It lasts longer, is more efficient, and offers better protection. I have opened engines that use dino oil and synthetic and the difference is unbelievable. Goodluck!
