strange noise from engine
Hey guys,
Car: 1998 C280 95,000 miles (V6 with the Harmonic Balancer replaced)
Problem: While stopped (as far as I can tell) with the engine running I hear a strange noise. It sounds like "crackling" (very random), I tried to find where the noise was coming from and as far as I can tell its the tensioner pulley (it's been replaced once by dealer). The noise coincides with the tensioner pulley's motion so I can only conclude that it needs to be replace...can I do this myself?
If not, about how much at a local shop (I'm in northern VA)?
Thanks

I'm a little out of it right now on what motors came with, but if it is a 112 motor you have, its a fairly easy replacement. If you have some E-Torx bits (E-40?) and a ratchet the tensioner is a simple replacement-removed the belt, take off the two bolts on the tensioner bracket, install the new and pull the retaining pin out. Otherwise, its about and hour or so labor at a dealership.
