BAS is brake assist. It senses when you might have a panic stop situation and assists by allowing quicker activation of the brakes by allowing more power assist from the brake booster.
It can be driven, but you might wish you hadn't if you end up in a panic stop situation and only need a couple more feet to stop the car.
Could be something simple like a stop lamp switch or a pressure sensor. The more extreem side of the possible repair would be a brake booster replacement due to a bad travel sensor.
