2008 Ml350
2008 350 engine

I have a 2008 ML350, that might have a problem, when it starts in the morning or after a few hours of sitting, there is a definite knock coming from under the hood when it first starts up. it only lasts for a second or two, then it goes away, It is also happening with another 08, ML350 and a 08 C300 that I know of. It sounds like a rod or lifter that might be oil starved, but how could all 3 cars be doing the same thing. Having the SA find it is a joke. Any help?

They all do that--it's normal and not a problem.

that sound scares me

our E320 did it and it scared me to the point of selling it at 66k miles.than we get our S class and it did it also but not as loud.i attribute it to synthetic oils in the 0-40 or 5-40 range which increase fuel efficiency and will allow you to safely start the engine at -60 degrees.when you shut the engine down the oil is bleeding out of the lifters and oil passeges and that initial knock is partially collapsed lifters and tolerance in the rod bearings, mayby even a little oil pump clatter until it catches up.i have switched to castrol syntec 10-40 and completely eliminated the issue.just my opinion.

I have the same noise on my '08 E350. I believe this has also been discussed in the C forum and the E forum. Seems the 350 engines do this. It really makes the car sound cheap and in need of servicing. It's embarrassing.
