Ambient air temp sensor harness- how to replace?

I searched all through the forums but mainly find threads about 'where do I find it'.
In my case, it's ripped off and all I have is a hanging bare wire. I purchased all the replacement parts needed (or at least all the parts my dealer said I needed) but the short harness that the sensor plugs into looks like it's designed to plug into the bare wire thats hanging and I don't have a plug there. Am I missing a plug piece or need to splice it in some way or what? A writeup or exploded view diagram would be helpful. Thanks

Most of the time Mercedes catalogs replacement plugs, connectors, etc. to facilitate harness repair. Probably this is almost never attempted at dealerships, but the parts should be visible in EPC.

You can subscribe to EPC yourself for free and maybe "help out" your parts personnel.

Wow what a great find for parts identification. Thanks.
I looked up section 106 'Horn and Outboard Temperature Indicator' and found the temperature sensor itself (which I have) but it doesn't include any of the other associated pieces. I'll keep looking but would still appreciate hearing from anyone who may have done this repair before.

If you think pics will help, here they are.
The first one is the bare wire where the sensor used to be attached. There are 2 seperate smaller wires wrapped in a protective tape
The 2nd pictue is all of the parts the dealer said it would take to repair. One end of the harness clearly plugs into the actual sensor, the other end is also a plug. I also don't know what to do with the two smaller things next to the harness.
Thanks

Those 'two smaller things' are in-line splicers. Make sure the cable is long enough to reach the sensor when you're done. Cut the plug that doesn't go to the sensor off the end of the harness and splice those two wires to the two wires coming out of your car...then plug it in. Ideally you would install a new plug on the wires coming out of your car but I bet that is part of the entire engine harness BOM.

Soldering the wires would be better than the splicers...........Good Luck

Got impatient and fixed it tonight. Registers normal, nearly accurate temps. Chk engine light still on but lat time I had a chk engine issue on my other car, it went out on its own a few days after the fix and I expect this will do the same.
I gave it a temporary tape up till I replace the front fender liner tomorrow and properly attach it.

Thanks for the help

The temp sensor is not in the CEL sequence so if it goes out it's coincidental. Check the code, clear it, and see if it comes back.

When the CEL came on (while on vacation) I took it to Autozone and ran the codes... 'ambient air temperature inconsistent with engine operating temp' was what it read. I had it in the dealer last week for oil change ( I was trying also to see if they would cover this under warranty) and they confirmed that the CEL was related to the ambient air sensor. They were missing one of the needed parts and ordered it. I paid for all parts and picked up when it came in and planned to do it myself, saving another day in the shop and $100 labor. My MB dealer is nowhere close to me either.
Anyway, according to the autozone reader and what MB of Oklahoma City tells me, the CEL was from the ambient air sensor (which was ripped loose). If it stays on more than a few days, I'll run the code again and see if a new code might have developed.

Wow, my bad. You learn something new everyday. It probably will go away then.

OK so I am having a similar issue in that my temperature is showing a constant 185 degrees. I pulled the fender flap off and there is no sign of an ambient sensor. I dont even see where it would plug in. Can you tell me where the other end of the harness would plug in? Thanks.

@barollins: I have same problem, the harness plug got pulled off the sensor somehow and it is dangling and I don't know where to plug it back as there is no sign of sensor. Have you figured out where the sensor should be?. I am guessing mine fell off when the harness got unplugged but I don't know where it was originally in or it is even still there. I see a white plastic thing with a hole in it, perhaps the sensor slides in there?. If you had this figured out, I'd very much appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

temp sensor wiring

Hi I am having same problem except my wires have been cut on oppisite side of engine and harness shown is really short. Does anyone know what gauge of wire I would need to buy to reach all the way over to drivers side where temp sensor plugs into?

I own a 2006 C280.. Same trbl.. I hit pothole.. This seems to have ripped my side marker, fog light, and my temperature sensor wires off.. I ordered a brand-new sensor but I can't find a piece that K'NEX to it.. The dealership tells me to it's a major harness piece.. Can someone please help me out as to what I should do next or where I can go get this fixed..

2007 C230 - Also having the ambient air temperature issue. Due to a broken ankle, can't get under there to look at it right now. However, along with this were two other codes. The one that concerns me is cylinder 1 misfire. It seems that all of this happened at the same time, so anyone believe that I have two different problems or is it highly likely that the ambient air sensor is screwing up the engine computer.

Thanks
