Smoke in a diesel is an indicator of rich running, look at the air filter to make sure it isn't clogged up as a start. Although, you did say black and blue, which could be oil burning. Does the car have any cold weather long crank time issues?

Could be the seal in the turbo thats failing. With a failed seal the turbo will operate but it will cause smoke as oil is getting into the intake air. It will get worse as time goes on but as long as the bearings are OK it will operate. Some causes of seal failure are wrong type of oil, low oil level, Overheating, and operating without a proper air filter element.
