08 s550 Front side marker light
My right front side marker light is out and I have the bulb, but the manual says they recommend you bring it into a Mercedes Dealer to have it changed.
Does anybody know the procedure? How complex can it be?

With a Mercedes anything is possible. Sometimes I think they over engineer things just to screw with our heads. Sorry, I don't know the procedure but am curious how a simple bulb replacement needs a mechanic's attention. Maybe a special tool?

Turns out it's not hard at all. You get it from the bottom. Three bolts, the door flips open, and you reach up inside to get at the bulb. It was so easy I changed both. Don't understand why they don't feel this can be done by the owner.

They just dont want people messing around with their cars. The same reason why more and more engine parts are being covered with panels. But, if you would have gone to the dealer you wouldnt have had to buy the bulbs.

Agreed - but I like doing the little things myself. Interestingly enough it would have in all likelihood taken two trips to the dealer. I replaced the one that was burnt out with a W5W bulb I picked up at the dealer. After it was in, I noticed that the new one was brighter than the one on the other side. Changed the other one and they are both the same. The W5W bulbs that came out have a smoked tip. Called the dealer parts department and they told me they don't have the ones with the smoked tip and they can't get them. Would prefer the originals, but will settle for two that are equally bright.
