Brake squeal, where to from here??

ML500 went in yesterday for brake squeal only when in reverse. Dealer said they corrected it. Was OK yesterday but this morning was the same as it was before it went in. Where do I go from here???

MB pads can glaze easily and start squealing, specially on heavy cars like yours. They probably scuffed them up which solves the problem temporarily. Go with a Kevlar pad like Porterfield or EBC Greenstuff. I just got a great deal on the Porterfield pads at 30% off. Check the wheels/brakes forum for details. This also eliminates the brake dust problem on the front wheels.

Also try quality anti-squeal lube behind the pad. This kinda acts like a cushion to keep the pads from vibrating and stops some of squealing. The MB anitsqueal lube should work fine and I can't imaging that the dealer didn't try that but you can ask.

Resolved at the 3rd visit by replacement of the pads and rotors. Dealer will not use other than MB parts as its under warranty. Have had many, many cars with disc brakes, even with sintered metallic pads and never had this before. They did on the first 2 visits resurface the rotors and scuff up the pads, and applied the paste. Each time it worked for a day.

I own a 2000 ML 430. It now has 14,400 miles on it. I am now on my 3rd set of brakes due to the brake squeal problem. All repairs were done by my dealer at no charge to me. Well, they are squealing again! My dealer says Mercedes is well aware of the problem, and they are working on a fix. The problem appears to be only with year 2000 and newer ML 430's and the new ML 500's. I had a 99 ML 430 which did not exhibit this problem. The year 2000, ML 430's went to the larger brakes.

Actually, the word squeal is not a strong enough word for the the noise that comes from my brakes. It is a very irratating high pitched sound. My passengers always mention it when they hear it. My dealer agrees it HAS to be solved. That's why he has installed 2 complete sets of brakes at no charge to me.
