S600 - 140 series engine - help needed!
I am asking this on behalf of a friend who is putting a new bottom end into a S600.
Basically a new bottom end has been purchased from MB for this car and there seems to be a problem with the timing chain length using the existing cylinder heads from the old block.
The bottom end was bought complete with all the chains supplied.
When the hydraulic tensioner is screwed into the left hand side of the engine it cannot screw all the way home as the timing chain runs out of slack - almost as though the timing chain is too short??
Was there a revision on timing chains or sprockets etc?? - I believe the car is circa 93
Please feel free to email me if you need more info.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

If i`m right about the that tensioner You have to push the center altheway out thru the front, reinstall the center piece by pushing it in thru the back two to three clicks only.
The tensioner is a sprung loaded hydraulic type - The spring just takes up the tension when there is no oil pressure. - Worth another look though! -
One other point: The New block did not come with a new hydraulic tensioner - was this changed on latter blocks??
MB does not seem to know the answer on this question.
The Mechanic/Engineer who is doing this has over 30 years experience, and a very knowledgeable chap. He has checked not once but a dozen times to make sure that his work is correct. Unfortunately he does not have the old bottom end to compare against, as there was a £2500 charge if the old one was not returned.
Thanks
Paul
