Exclamation 300E surging @ idle

Hi, I'm new to this, so please be patient. I just purchased a 1986 300E w 3.0 inline 6 cyl. The previous owner had it for years, but sold it because of the surging idle. I brought her home, installed new plugs (old ones were shot). This seemed to help, but didn't fix the problem. When the car is cold, it will fire, but the idle surges between 500 to 1,000 RPM. When the car warms up (above 80c) it runs like a champ. Also, it seems like it takes a while to start whatever the temp. ? The car has 178K on it, but doesn't smoke or hesitate whenever she's warm. Also, when the car is cold it doesn't have much get up & go, but after it's warm it's great. I don't have any manuals on the car, so I don't know where the sensors are located ( idle control, air intake, air flow meter, fuel distibution, crank sensor, elec. overload module, etc.) Any help, would be greatly appreciated.
