1991 190e fuel delivery problem

My 1991 190e is not getting gas so it will start. It would not start until after many tries originally and then would run fine. Then it would run a very short distance and stall out like it was out of gas. Now it will start at all. Acts like a car out of gas. It sounds like at least one of the fuel pumps is running although not sure of that. Any chance I could get lucky and it only be a bad fuel filter? Any good way to check out the most likely cause. Unfortunately I am a good distance from anyone who works on Mercedes.

Start with obvious checklist items . . . fuse okay? last time fuel filter changed? there's also a removable screen in the fuel tank. Will it start without the gas cap on? After the fuel pump and accumulator, it's pretty much a straight shot up to the regulator in the engine bay.
