Help 1987 190e

I am very much a novice mechanically. The handbreak button on my 1987 190e is broken, I purchased a new one but I need to know how to get the old broken one off, so I don' break something else. If I grab the remaining tip of the old button with vice grips and twist it off will it come off? Then does the new one just slide on? I know I sound like a real dummy but I really need a step by step proceedure and what to expect. PLEASE!

The button on the very end of the handbreak. Pushed in to release the handbreak. It is black and about 1/2 inch in diameter. The button has a female port and the handbrake handle must have a male post. I'm assuming this based on what I can see of the broken component that remains on the end of the handbreak. Hope this clarifies my question, sorry I'm not better at explaining the problem. Does this make sense?
