Keyless-go problem

I originally posted this in the w211 Forum, but maybe this is a more appropriate spot.

"The sensor on the drivers door of my 05 E500 isn't working properly anymore. I have to grab the rear handle with the key on me to open the doors to the whole car now. Is there a switch in the door handle itself that fails? Is it a DIY kind of issue? "

Someone here suggested it was the door handle itself...does that sound right? Any idea on cost for a new one?

2008 - S550 4Matic, 2010 - E350 4Matic, 2010 - C350 4Matic
I have Keyless-Go on my S-Class sedan and it works all the time. That is why I thought it was a good idea, to get it for my 2008 C350. It never worked properly in that car. The dealership tried everything and it never worked. I had to have the key in my hand to open the door or to start the car and sometimes I get a message, while driving down the road "No key detected"

On my 2010 C 350 the Keyless-Go did not work 4 weeks after the delivery but they replaced the batteries in the key and it is working.

The dealer told me that the system in the C-Class is a cheap version of the S-Class system and I can confirm, the proof is in the pudding, useless.

On my 2007 GL450 when the keyless-go function on the front passenger door didn't work the fix was to "replace the exterior door handle".
