HID headlamp; one side orange, the other the normal white

2001 E430

The HID light on one side is now orange.
The other is the normal bright white.

The orange side ignites and burns bright white for a few seconds, then over the course of 5 or so seconds, it turns orange, sort of like a street lamp ion Chicago.

How can I diagnose this?

Your bulb is about to burn out...it will soon change to pink and then proceed to burn out

Thank You for your reply. I was hoping it was the bulb and not the ballast. I'll buy one or order one tomorrow.

Buy two. Your bulbs color shift (become whiter/bluer and lose output) over time. They won't match if you replace just one, and if one's failed the other one will pretty soon anyway.

Bought two. Philips. Definately brighter than the original Car has almost 200,000 on the clock, with much of that at night. It would have been looking goofy if I had only changed one. Thanks for the tip on buying two.

I got them form a guy on Ebay that buys them bulk and resells singles. $45 each. vs $125 at the parts store vs $250 at the stealership.

The Owner's manual says bring it to dealer. Ya right.

How to change:

Unscrew access cover in engine bay - only turns about 15 degrees and cover comes off.

Look inside, you'll see the power connection. Turn it about 45 degrees and it will come off.

You'll see the power end of the bulb. You'll see it held in by a plastic ring attached with a torx socket head screw. Unloosen each screw about 1/2 to 1 full turn. Now turn the retainer piece so the screws line up with the enlarged hole and simply remove.

Pull the bulb out.

Do not touch the new bulb with bare hands - use surgical gloves or something you are comfortable with.

Insert new bulb and twist gently until the aligning tangs allow full seating of the bulb.

Then reinstall retainer ring, tighten screws

Reintall power plug

Reinstall engine bay cover.

On driver's side, if you have headlamp washers, the aux reservoir for the headlamp washer fluid simply lifts straight up and off the main reservoir. You need to remove it for access. The pax side is tight, and you sort of have to fine the top retainer bolr by feel.

All in all - about 10 minutes for both bulbs, once you know what you need to do.
