Newbie to mbw, 03 e500 suspension issue.

Newbie to mbw, 03 e500 suspension issue.
Hey guys,
I am new to the forums and the car. I've owned several bmws in the past, and this being my first merc. things are a little different. My problem or what i think is abnormal is that when i drive over a pothole the rear driver suspension makes a thump sound. Its a hollow sound, almost like the strut is in a fixed position and there is no give from the suspension when hitting a hole in the road. has anybody else encountered this? (instrument cluster shows no warnings of this).
