how do steering pumps die other than leak?

I have a 01 C320 with 95k miles and the steering can
become heavy at time.

It happens mostly when the steering is quickly reversed
after having turned in the other direction first.
Like in parallel parking, or fast 3 point u turn.

The effort is heavy as if no power assist was there.

Other than that, the steering feels good in normal corner turns.
The steering rack makes no noise, fluid stays normal, no need to add.
drive bell in good shape, no fluid leak can be seen.

Is that sign of the pump going bad before dying??

If so, then the water pump out last longer than this steering pump.
