Heater problem

Got in my 2005 S500 Saturday am and the heater came on full blast with automatic setting, only way to make it bearable was to drop the temp to 54. It almost seems that at that setting, it is cooling the heater air.
Any suggestions?

S500 heater

Dealer tells me I need a new head unit (the overhead console with the lights, switches and sliding roof switches ) because it is indicating the interior car temp is 32deg. seems unlikely but who knows. I can buy a used one on ebay but once installed does it need to be calibrated?

It should be a simple thermister no calibration needed.
