Clearing "stubborn" codes?

2008 Mercedes ML350 with P1 package and not quite 10K miles.
No issues - no lights.

Long story short, after clearing codes using my Autoenginuity with Mercedes extension, I find that there are two codes that I can't remove. These are P1991 and C2001.

The instructions tell me that I must recycle the key for 10 seconds to finish clearing the code.

This isn't computing in my head. I've tried a couple things and it didn't seem to work.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with the car. Yes, I've accidently bumped the shifter into neutral once or twice (P1991). The ESP code c2001 "could" be a leftover from the battery replacement (done before I bought the car last fall ) as there were several other codes having to do with low voltage - but they all cleared without the need for key cycle.

Any help with reset these codes would be appreciated. I believe the issue is that I don't understand how to "cycle the key".

Thank you!

clear then codes. Then turn the key to off and wait 10-15 seconds. Then turn the key back to on. Rescan and see if the codes cleared.

I tried several variants of this...and it didn't seem to work. That's why I'm asking for help.

Let me be a bit more detailed.... (this is going to sound painfully)

When the key is in the on position and you clear these codes, does the engine have to be "running" or "not running"? (I know that for most codes it doesn't matter but there are "some" that it does. I think I tried both ways with no effect.)

I know that I then "clear codes".

When I turn the key to "off" - is that "shut off the running engine"? Is it return the key to the same position that you insert/remove the key? Do I need to "remove" the key? (I don't know that I tried all these.)

Is there something about 10-15 seconds? I tried to do that - figuring that the on-board computer took 10-15 seconds to clear the code. Would longer not work?

When I turn the key back on... Is it that simple or am I restarting the engine without turning off the ignition circuit?

The "clear all codes" didn't remove P1991 or C2001 - and the software said something about needing cycle the key for a minimum of 10 seconds. I'm trying to clear them to see if they are historical or current before I call the dealership to fix what doesn't need to be fixed. There is no illuminated light on the dash.

Thanks again for clarity.

put your key in the ignition without turning it, this is position "0". Turn the key to the first stop, your airbag or srs light should be lit up. This is position "1", turn the key to the next stop, all your dummy lights should be lit. This is position "2", From position 2 if you turn the key the engine will crank, this is the start position.

To clear the codes insert your key and turn it to position 2, all your dash lights should be illuminated but the vehicle should not be running. Connect your scan tool and scan the vehicle. Clear the codes. Now turn the key to position 0 but don't remove the key. wait 10-15 seconds. Next turn the key back to position 2 so that all dummy lights are illuminated but don't start the engine and rescan the vehicle. This should have cleared all codes. Hope that hels
