97 S420 Guage Cluster Need Help to Change

Hello there,

Hopefully I am posting in the right forum. I want to change the guage cluster in my 1997 S420. I just had a few questions before I even attempt this. First, I've heard that if it's a 1996 and after Mercedes, you have to get it done at the dealer, otherwise the car will not start. My second question, will the mileage read the same, or will it have the mileage on the new (used) cluster? (i.e. is the mileage stored somewhere else?)

If anybody can help me with this info, or if you have any tips for me, I'd really appreaciate it.

Thanks alot everyone.
