Jump Start = Major Problems ?

My car battery was weak recently and I had jump started my 1999 SLK230 several times. I thought I had fixed the problem by charging the battery , but it died again, and this time when I jumped it, the idle kept surging between 1000-1300 rpms and there was no response from the throttle. I have searched the archives and have already tried disconnecting the battery. I have also used an OBDII scanner to pull codes and didn't get any. The BAS and ASR lights are both on. I am at a loss to what may be causing this problem, but am afraid to bring it in to the dealer because I know they will just start replacing parts. Has anyone experienced this in there cars or knows of the cause and more importantly, the fix? I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I replaced the battery with a brand new MBZ battery and the problem still persists. Anyone?

Average peak lifespan of a battery is 5 years and anything after that is pushing it. I replaced mine 3 years ago when I noticed things were slowing down a bit here and there. And I did not get a MB battery, just a Sears Diehard International. People here are saying Interstate is better, I dunno.

In your case, perhaps the alternator is not charging the battery, check that too. If you had a volt meter, you can do it yourself.

I've already replaced the battery, as it says in my first post.

Bring it to a shop where they can check the electrical system. Also, I'm not sure that MB gives a 5 year battery. It may only be a three year one.

I think a likely cause would be a failing alternator. Most gas stations these days seem to have an alternator diagnostic system. You should have them check it out.

Does the surging still happen? Does the new battery go dead?

Yes, the problem was the same with the new battery. The car is now with the dealer and they have not yet figured out the problem. They have ordered an ECM unit to test with.

Possibly a faulty MAF sending bad numbers to the ECU. It won't throw a code since it's not dead just sending bad data.
